Barangay Ginebra San Miguel outsmarts the Purefoods Star Hotshots, making its second win in the 2016 PBA Commissioner's Cup with the final score of 92-87 last Sunday, February 28 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The Ginkings opens the first quarter with their good ball movement as L.A. Tenorio drives the team for the early lead against the Star Hotshots. "Kakaibang ball movement ang pinapakita ng Barangay Ginebra", said Dominic Uy. The Barangay Ginebra earns points from backdoor plays under the baseline with the help of their twin towers, Japeth Aguilar and Greg Slaughter. The Purefoods Star Hotshots make points from their long bombs courtesy of "big game" James Yap and PJ Simon.
On the second frame of the game it is Japeth Aguilar capitalizing on the part of Ginkings and it is PJ Simon on the other end. Simon hitting a couple of 3-pointers to support his team finishing with 14 points after the 24-minute marker. The crowd goes wild as Japeth delivers a powerful two-handed slam jam from an alley-oop pass by Othyus Jeffers.
As the Ginkings enjoy their lead against the Star Hotshots, Raffy Reavis displays his power against the twin towers of Ginebra, getting rebounds and capitalizes the painted area. Also Mark Barroca using his fiery hands nails four 3-pointers to bring the Hotshots to an 8-point lead.
Barangay Ginebra comes back with a back-to-back basket from Jeffers and Devans to cut the deficit down to four. L.A Tenorio breakins the trap set by the Star Hotshots, locating Mark "the Spark" Caguioa for an open shoot but was rejected by Denzel Bowles. It is Gregzilla who cleans the mess creating a seven-to-nothing run in the final minute of the final frame, finishing with 92-87 decision over Star Hotshots. Ginkings import Othyus Jeffers plays big earning 23 points, 15 rebounds and makes 7 assists against the opponent’s import Denzel Bowles who gets 15 points.
Mark Barroca says he feels bad not because of how they played but because they lost, after his superb third quarter play. Barangay Ginebra coach Time Con claims it was a good game with good things happened to his team while bad things happened to the other team in the end. After winning the game, the team climbs up to the fourth place of the team standings at 2-2 together with NLEX Road Warriors and Blackwater Elite.
