Great tension can still be felt on the dispute about the South China Sea. It is well guarded by the Chinese military vessels and military forces against the other countries such as Taiwan, Malaysia, Brunei and Philippines, that also claim parts of it.
South China Sea is said to have rich deposits of natural resources like oil that’s essential for people’s daily need and has an abundant marine sanctuary. It is also a very reliable route of international trades, which gives it a lot of attention and countries fighting over it.
Philippines, which is in a close fight with China has already pursued China at the UN tribunal and somehow had been successful. However, China is very still in claiming the marginal sea, strengthening more its military strategies and forces. Yet, the Philippines is also making efforts to boost its military defenses. Pres. Benigno Aquino III of the Philippines promised to achieve a robust military force before he leaves his position to his successor. He plans to acquire new frigates that are necessary to the developing military defense.
Vietnam is also on dispute with China when on 1974, the Chinese troops had killed more than 70 Vietnamese and had continued on the 1980s. Up until now, Vietnam is still in protest on China’s moves in claiming the South China Sea.
Moreover, a segment of RT (or Russia Today, a global news network) explained that the United States’ military patrols in the South China Sea to make sure that there is a freedom of navigation in the disputed maritime region, but China reacts to it as a provocation on their side and warns the United States to back off from their claimed territory.
On December 2015, BBC news reported that the Australian military also made flights over South China Sea to exercise freedom of navigation. The P-3 Orion of Australia’s Department of Defense made an investigation.
In all the other countries’ threats to back down China on its claim on the disputed sea, greater reinforcements, improving strategic plans, employing military forces and a lot more, China firmly holds on to its principle and prerogative on South China Sea.
