November 18, 2015 marked another breakthrough of Filipino talent and creativity when a Filipina inventor was personally invited by Pres. Barack Obama on his talk about the climate change, during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC Summit). Together with Jack Ma, the CEO of the world’s biggest E-Commerce, Aisa Mijeno, a faculty member of De La Salle University- Lipa, has been called to talk about her latest invention which is a total need, not just of the Filipinos but also of the people who don’t have permanent source of light. Watch the video as the Filipina engineer shared the limelight with the two most influential people of the world.
Mijeno stated that she and her brother, Raphael, had been working with this inexpensive light source that could last for 8 hours of lighting and is only using a cup of water and 2 tablespoons of salt! It comes along with a USB slot that can charge low power devices like mobile phones and is very efficient during emergencies and disasters like floods, typhoons, earthquakes, etc. The consumer can also use a direct sea water to operate the lamp, effortlessly. She said that it could cost around 20$. It has a consumable inside that should be maintained every 6 months because it uses a chemical reaction for energy usage. The consumable content only costs 2$ to 3$. Furthermore, it also helps in the climate change movement because this salt powered lamp is safer than that of a kerosene lamp which emits carbon and sometimes can cause fire accidents.
The siblings started off their company which they called the SALT which is acronym for “Sustainable Alternative Lighting.” Mijeno emphasized during the APEC CEO Forum that their company is a growing company and still needs to be funded in order to continuously run and make more productive and helpful creations to the people.
President Obama said that he wanted to support young entrepreneurs like Aisa Mijeno who had a very promising advocacy of helping with our changing climate. Together with the other CEOs, Obama said they all should support these kinds of entrepreneurs because they have a clear goal and can become very successful in the future.
