The recent trending issue about the mistaken announcement of
the Ms. Universe is a slap of reality to us Filipinos. We cannot deny the fact
that we are looked down by some countries. Frustrating as it is, it surely
traces back to our status as a nation. It was just unfortunate for Pia to bear
the outright bullying in behalf of all of us. I wonder if the winner is from a
first world country, will the real results still be questioned? Will the
candidate suffer the same ill treatment and be told she was not voted by any of
the candidates to win does not deserve the crown? Or will it be graciously
accepted as an honest mistake in the part of the host, Steve Harvey. But
because it is just Philippines, so even the judge’s depended result is still in
question.
Filipinos may always have what it takes to excel in any
endeavor but because of the fact that we are a struggling third world country,
we have to bear being trampled upon by others. The case of our representative
for Ms. Universe just highlighted our situation. For example, our Overseas
Filipino Workers are experiencing the same fate in a different circumstance. We
have the ability and the capacity accompanied by hardworking, determined and
competent attitudes yet most of the time we are deprived of the trust we truly
deserve alongside with the benefits just because we are Filipinos.
Our current status as a nation is a product of so many
intertwining factors. It may not be easy to bring ourselves to aim for
excellence. There will always be a Ms. Germany who despite the fact that we
prove our worth, will always claim we are not worth any glory. However, on a
light note there will also be a Ms. USA who will acknowledge our capability and
support us to claim what is due to us.
In the end we still continue to battle this dilemma and just
like Pia’s immediate claim of the crown,
we will also be able to claim our best deserve position.
